The word “deaf” (with a capital d) is used to describe an individual whose first or preferred method of communication is british sign language (bsl), while the term d/deaf – now widely recognised by care service professionals – refers to everyone with a hearing loss: deaf, deaf, deafblind, hard-of-hearing and deafblind people
